AJ Auxerre won the second leg of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats play-off on Sunday, May 29, 2022, after a hard-fought 5-4 penalty shoot-out victory over ASSE. The Auxerrois finally find the elite of French soccer, 10 years after their relegation.
At the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, for the second leg of the play-off for the Ligue 1 Uber Eats, AJ Auxerre finally validated its rise in the first division following a new 1-1 draw. After a perfectly balanced first half, Jean-Marc Furlan’s men went into action at the beginning of the second half thanks to a goal scored by Hamza Sacky on a cross from the right by Mathias Autret. The green team of Saint-Etienne reacted in the last 15 minutes of the match through Mahdi Camara after a header from Enzo Crivelli following a corner (1-1, 76′). The score remained there until the end of regulation time and extra time.
After 120 minutes without a winner, Carlens Arcus’ teammates had the last word in the penalty shootout thanks to a great Donovan Léon, who stopped the first attempt of Stéphano, shot by Ryad Boudebouz. Auxerrois, on their side, succeeded in taking 5 penalties. Just like against Sochaliens, Donovan Léon gave the victory to AJA.
After 18 seasons in Ligue 1, AS Saint-Étienne is relegated to Ligue 2 BKT.
As a reminder, Jean-Marc Furlan achieved his fifth ascent in D1 with three different clubs: Troyes (3 times), Stade Brestois 29 (1), then AJ Auxerre.
