In its home ground of Anfield Road, the Liverpool team was hung up on Wednesday, April 13, by the Benfica formation, but still qualified, thanks to its large victory in the first leg (3-1), last week at the Luz stadium in Lisbon, home of the Lisbon team.

Liverpool’s German coach Jurgen Klopp took the opportunity to rotate his squad for the second leg, leaving many key players (Sadio Mané, Mohammed Salah, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Van Dick, Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold) on the bench. In the 31st minute of play, the young French central defender (22 years), Ibrahima Konaté, already scorer in the first leg, jumped higher than anyone else to put the ball in the back. Just after the half hour, in the 32nd minute, Gonzalo Ramos found the equalizer for the visitors, a score that did not change until the break.

At the end of the second half, the German tactician had made changes. Roberto Firmino, very discreet in the first half, gave the advantage to his team in the first fifteen minutes of the second half (56th) and then in the 65th his second of the match. At 3 to 1, the Liverpudlians thought they were at ease but saw a reversal of situation by the Portuguese who made a spectacular recovery, reducing the score to (3-2) thanks to a goal of the Ukrainian striker Roman Yarenchuk in the 73rd minute. Almost at the end of the game, in the 82nd minute, the twirling Uruguayan striker of Benfica Darwin Nuñez restored the balance. A crazy match, full of twists and turns.

Liverpool and Benfica played a great game and the fans were spoiled. Even if the Lisbon team left the competition after this exceptional match (3-3), they saved the honor.
