Three storylines to watch
The defending champions: When a team wins one title, the question eventually becomes “Can it do it again?” Three area teams – Divine Savior Holy Angels in Division 1, Whitefish Bay in Division 2 and Brookfield Academy in Division 4 – won championships last year, and none of those teams experienced the heavy losses that would prevent another run. By season’s end don’t be surprise if one or more of these sides is hoisting another championship trophy at state.
Warrior watch: Beyond the area’s defending champions, the team to keep on eye on is Muskego. The Warriors combine a core of talented returning players with all-state caliber talent such as sophomore Anna Sikorski, who played at Divine Savior Holy Angels last season, and senior Haley Johnson, who previously played for her club team during the high school season. You can’t argue with the results so far. Muskego is 4-0 and is coming off a 1-0 victory over Whitefish Bay last Thursday.
Going back-to-back: According records kept by the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association, there have been just 12 players who have scored 100 points or more in a season. Kenosha St. Joseph senior Martina Harrington has a chance to join Catholic Memorial’s Emily Cervantes (2013, ’14, ’16) and Brookfield Academy’s Anika Washburn (2015, ‘16. ’17) as just the third player to accomplish the feat more than once. The reigning Metro Classic player of the year had 102 points (44 goals, 14 assists) last season and has already accumulated 22 points in four games.
