SAN JOSE — Watsonville High’s championship soccer team took the pitch together for one final time Saturday, this time in a venue much larger than the ones the Wildcatz dominated opponents on throughout the 2021-22 season.
The Central Coast Section Open Division champion was one of seven high school soccer programs from Northern California honored at halftime of the host San Jose Earthquakes 2-2 draw with Austin FC. The majority of the 13,062 fans in attendance at PayPal Park cheered the Wildcatz’s accomplishment when the school was announced over the public-address system.
“It’s great, the support we got from our fans,” said Wildcatz coach Roland Hedgpeth, who celebrated his 80th birthday on Friday. “I bet we have over 100 here who bought tickets to come to the game. That’s quite a bit. That’s quite a bit of support.”
