On Monday, June 13, 2022, the Ahmad bin Ali stadium in Doha hosted the penultimate qualifying playoff match for the Qatar 2022 World Cup between Australia, representing the Asia-Oceania zone, and Peru, the fifth-placed team from the South American zone. Australia won the match on penalties (0-0/5-4).

At the end of a very hasty first act and very poor in chances, the Australians showed themselves more dynamic in some situations with the Frankfurt striker Adjin Hrustic (8th), Jackson Irvine of Sankt Pauli twice (17th, 40th) and Martin Boyle (33rd), but could not worry Pedro David Gallese Quiroz, the lanky Peruvian goalkeeper of 1m89, welded around a well established defense.

After the break, the Argentine coach Ricardo Gareca’s protégés were free and attacked the goal of Mathew Ryan of Real Sociedad to break the deadlock. Gianluca Lapadula, the Benevento striker (50th, 86th), Segio Peña (67th), but especially the very active Crhistian Cueva (69th), tried to break the deadlock. However, they lacked success.

At the end of the game, the Socceros” were very close to open the score by Hrustic (88th) but were beaten by Gallese, with firm gloves. It was therefore necessary to go into extra time to decide the winner. In the 100th minute, Edinson Flores tried to make the difference, but Mathew Ryan did not give up. In the 108th minute, the same Flores, the Dc United striker, saw his ball hit the post. And finally it was in the penalty shootout that the difference was made (5-4). The Australians, who mastered better the excercise, join France, Denmark that they had already faced in Russia in 2018, as well as Tunisia in group D for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.
